FUNDAMENTALS OF PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT PLANNING, SECOND EDITION by James A. Kennedy, MD, American Psychiatric Publishing, 2003, is the "Gold Standard" for writing Psychiatric Treatment Plans.

Since the publication of the first edition in 1992, it has continued to be the stardard for writing treatment plans. It has also established the basis for the Kennedy Approach to Psychiatric Treatment Planning.

Key to the Kennedy Approach is its ease generating effective treatment plans that are easily understood by both your staff and your patients. When considering alternatives to the Kennedy Approach, be cautious about getting caught up in treatment planning processes that are too complicated for practical use. Clinicians often have great difficulty generating these alternative plans and patients struggle with understanding and following through with these plans.

In the Kennedy Approach psychiatric problems and strengths are organized around the seven "Universal Functional Domains" for psychiatry:

1) Psychological Impairment
2) Social Skills
3) Violence
4) ADL-Occupational Skills
5) Substance Abuse
6) Medical Impairment
7) Ancillary Impairment (financial, legal, environmental, etc.)
